Prosthetics & Limb Loss Research (Department of Veterans Affairs)
Category: Prosthetics & Sensory Aids
According to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), "the total number of veterans using prosthetics, sensory aids, and related services from VA has increased by more than 70 percent since 2000." Veterans receiving prosthetics-related VA care include many of the wounded Iraq and Afghanistan wounded servicemembers (estimated 6 percent) who have lost a limb. Additionally, many other veterans who lost limbs because of diabetes and other disorders have required amputations.
In a 2013 report written for the VA-supported research organization, Extremity, Trauma, and Amputation Center of Excellence, 226 (2%) of the 12,581 battle-related casualties involving traumatic extremity injuries in Iraq and Afghanistan from 2003 to 2013 were women.
